PRISON

SPRING FILMS FOR CHANNEL 4 (2020)

For the first time in years, cameras have been allowed behind the walls of an English prison. With exclusive access to HMP Durham, this three-part series offers the viewer a unique insight into the ecosystems that underpin it. Embedded on the wings for over 7 months, the films uncover the hierarchical structures of the prison population and reveals how the understaffed, overworked officers combat the issues of drugs, mental health and violence.

‘Paddy Wivell’s terrifyingly intimate look at life behind bars felt like one of the most unsparing depictions of prison ever seen on the small screen. The director clearly gained the trust of inmates and authorities alike and the result was documentary television of real depth, nuance and compassion.’ - The Guardian

‘Prison is hard watching but Paddy Wivell is a great documentary maker...always.’ - Suzanne Moore
